Caligari (Werner Krauss), a fairground charlatan, exhibits a somnambulist (Conrad Veidt) who commits murder at the doctor’s bidding. With its unprecedented sets, costumes & makeup, Robert Wiene’s revolutionary work, scripted by Carl Mayer, liberated audiences & filmmakers from the suffocating naturalistic conventions that dominated novels & theatre of the time, initiating German Expressionism & profoundly influencing horror films for several generations.
