Control is a 2007 black-and-white biopic film about Ian Curtis (1956–1980), lead singer of post-punk band Joy Division. Based on the book Touching from a Distance, by Curtis’s widow, Deborah, who is also a co-producer of the film, the film details the life of the troubled young musician, who forged a new kind of music out of the punk rock scene of the United Kingdom in the 1970s, and the band Joy Division, which he headed from 1977 to 1980. It also deals with his rocky marriage and extramarital affairs, as well as his increasingly frequent seizures, which were thought to contribute to the circumstances leading to his suicide on the eve of Joy Division’s first U.S. tour. The title is a reference to the Joy Division song, “She’s Lost Control”—believed to be a reference to an epileptic client befriended by Curtis while employed at a Job Centre in Macclesfield, who later died during a seizure.

Directed by Edo Bertoglio, written by Glenn O’Brien and produced by Maripol, is a rare real-life snapshot of ultra-hip subculture of post-punk era Manhattan. Starring renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and featuring such early Village artists as James Chance, Amos Poe, Walter Steding, and Tav Falco, the film is a bizarre elliptical urban fairytale. The soundtrack features many artists including Tuxedomoon, Melle Mel, Vincent Gallo, John Lurie, the Plastics, and Basquiat’s own band, Gray. The dialogue audio for the film was lost, so actor Saul Williams dubbed the late Basquiat’s voice.

A swirling, impressionistic portrait of an artist who regretted nothing, writer-director Olivier Dahan’s La Vie en Rose stars Marion Cotillard in a blazing performance as the legendary French icon Edith Piaf. From the mean streets of the Belleville district of Paris to the dazzling limelight of New York’s most famous concert halls, Piaf’s life was a constant battle to sing and survive, to live and love. Raised in her grandmother’s brothel, Piaf was discovered in 1935 by nightclub owner Louis Leplee (Gerard Depardieu), who persuaded her to sing despite her extreme nervousness. Piaf became one of France’s immortal icons, her voice one of the indelible signatures of the 20th Century.
