Selama 1.600 tahun pesannya terkubur di kancah sejarah; dan ketika bundelan lembar-lembar papirus yang berisi injil ini akhirnya sampai ke tangan para ahli, mereka semua tercekat, keheranan. Inilah injil yang tak pernah terlihat lagi sejak awal masa kekristenan, dan bahkan hanya sedikit ahli yang berpikir bahwa dia benar-benar ada. Sungguh menggemparkan, karena naskah kuno ini berkisah dari perspektif Yudas Iskariot, pengkhianat terbesar dalam sejarah.
Dalam reinterpretasi yang amat radikal ini, Yesus justru menyuruh Yudas untuk mengkhianati dirinya. Berlawanan dengan pemaparan yang terdapat di dalam Kitab Suci Perjanjian Baru, Yudas ditampilkan sebagai teladan murid Yesus. Dialah satu-satunya murid yang memahami jati diri Yesus yang sesungguhnya.
Reinterpretasi radikal itu ditolak oleh Gereja resmi; dan salah satu pemimpinnya, St. Irenaeus dari Lyon, pada tahun 180 mencap injil tersebut sebagai bidah. Sejak itu, sebagai ajaran yang disingkirkan, Injil Yudas lenyap dari peredaran, sampai tahun 1970-an, ketika beberapa petani udik dari Mesir Tengah menemukan salinan injil itu di Al Minya. Lebih dari 25 tahun naskah kuno itu beredar di pasar gelap barang antik, sebagai barang dagangan, dalam kondisi yang terus memburuk, sampai lembar-lembar papirusnya robek-robek dan rontok, sebagian menjadi fragmen kecil dalam ukuran milimeter. Baru pada tahun 2001 akhirnya dia sampai di tangan tim para ahli yang berhasil merestorasi dan mengartikan pesan yang terkandung di dalamnya.

Biography
Rodolphe Kasser, Ph.D., a professor emeritus on the Faculty of Arts at the University of Geneva, is one of the world�s leading Coptologists. He has organized the restoration and prepared the editio princeps of codex Tchacos, containing the Gospel of Judas and three other Coptic Gnostic texts.
Marvin Maeyer, Ph.D., Griset Professor of Bible and Christian Studies at Chapman University Albert Schweitzer Institute, is one of the foremost scholars on Gnoticism, the Nag Hammadi Library and texts about Jesus outside the New Testament.
Gregor Wurst, Ph.D., is professor of Ecclesiastical History and Patristics at the University of Augsburg, Germany.
Bart D. Ehrman, Ph.D., is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and an expert on early Christianity.
