M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2009
By: Valerie Oliveiro
Every family portrait tells a story. Behind fake smiles lie creases of worry that unintentionally divulge family secrets you swore youll never tell a single soul. Click goes a camera and that moment is frozen in time forever.
Years pass, society warps and relationships grow or wither under ever-changing circumstances.
From dysfunctional families to closely-knit families, artists have been recording how the family nucleus has changed over the years.
The M1 Singapore Fringe Festival ushers in the new year with a call for personal reflection on family ties, filled with performances by local established and emerging artists such as panggung ARTS, T.H.E Dance Company, Irfan Kasban, Melissa Quek, Genevieve Chua, Chong Li-Chuan and The Necessary Stage.
International acts will share their take on family bonds as well. Japanese artist Shigeaki Iwai is in town to record lullabies for a new work based on Singapores multicultural communities. Another work, Mutsugoto, is an installation that invites couples to experience intimacy through digital media.

The Necessary Stages Frozen Angels opened the festival on 7 January, fusing live performance with multimedia to explore the effects of stem cell research on human relationships.

Playwright Haresh Sharma writes, Why such a safe theme for the Fringe, you might ask? Well, as a semi public-funded Festival, we feel it is our national obligation to encourage Singaporeans to pro-create, i.e., to be pro-active in creative works of art. All seriousness aside, were taking this opportunity to present to you performances and events that question and challenge notions of family.
ArtZine will be providing an extensive coverage of the M1 Singapore Frigne Festival so do look out for our interviews with the artists and our reviews!
