He received numerous literary prizes, including the PEN Freedom-to-Write Award, a Hellman-Hammett Award, and he was a finalist for the Kiriyama Prize. He lives in Jakarta. Willem Samuels also translated The Mute's Soliloquy and The Fugitive.
