A fictionalized memoir of family life in the former colonial Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), Faded Portraits is the story of the once powerful De Paulys, and especially of Aunt Sophie, the matriarch, whose efforts to preserve the family heritage prove inevitably tragic.
