The book discusses education in Timor-Leste during and after the liberation struggle, with a particular focus on the literacy campaign of 1974–1975 and popular education. Central in the discourses herein are literacy and literacy campaigns, the historical moment, FRETILIN's (Frente Revolucionária de Timor-Leste Independente or The Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor) role in education, and the importance placed on the contributions of Amílcar Cabral and Paulo Freire. The book's highlighting of Cabral's and Machel's inspiration for FRETILIN and the educators of Timor-Leste might offer unique insight into global solidarity and, particularly, African contributions to popular education.
